Trying to recreating a decades old style of photography is harder then it seems. The lighting, camera, prospective come from a time long before I was born. No big issue, we have stronger lights, better camera, more knowledge in controlling light. No Problem. Ha, I was pleasantly surprised.
As you can see on the left a glamor shot of Hedy Lamarr. Let's look at the hard lighting in her face and how it is used to focus your eyes on her face. Also note how the light makes you feel a 'Holy light" concept feel. The idea that Hedy is speaking directly to "God".
The first wall I hit when shooting my version was; I don't like shooting glamor shots. Is a hard subject for me because I have an issue shotting people. But I pushed on and choose something a little unique. Since I work in the film industry and shooting photography is a hobby for me. I figured "what the hell," why not shoot old glamor Hollywood.
After about an hour of researching and getting the lighting just right. I realized that I couldn't replicate the hard lighting because of the advancement in the current lighting sources that I had. With some tweaks to my lighting source along with some blockers; some help with from my wife and friends. We where able to shooting the below shot. Not perfect but I think, I was close. I love the ability to mix my film making and photography hobby in one shot. This was a lot of fun and I suggest anyone looking for something unique. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
